A little bit about Bert Krak

I started tattooing full time at Rock-A-Billy Tattoo in Lauderhill, Florida six years ago on Labor Day. Dave Poole apprenticed me for about two years prior to that. My apprenticeship consisted of working a full time job in the day time, raising a family, and working at the tattoo shop at night. Dave and many other artists that were around me taught me not only how to tattoo but how to be a gentleman, businessman, and a craftsman. My time at Rock-A-Billy with Danny Knight, Uncle Johnny, Dave Poole, and Joey Desormeaux was one of the best learning environments I could have been in. I am very grateful for all the knowledge that was past down to me, and I owe all these guys in more ways than one.

I am currently living, tattooing, and raising my family in Queens, New York. I work at Top Shelf Tattooing and work by appointment or walk in. I specialize in classic american tattooing, but I will try to accomodate any customers request. I draw inpiration from many sources, but mostly from my closest friends and family members.

In a career spanning twenty-six years, graffiti artist RISK has impacted the evolution of street writing as an artform here in Los Angeles and worldwide. His signature tag ran on the subway cars of New York, becoming the first writer outside of New York to be recognized by the same legendary graffiti artists who inspired him early on. In L.A. RISK continued to push the limits further than they had ever gone before by bombing – what would later be referred to in the graffiti world as a ‘heaven’ – on freeway overpasses and other highly visible spots throughout the city gaining much notoriety for his unique style. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third Rail series of art shows; he later parlayed the Third Rail brand into the first authentic line of graffiti-inspired clothing.

Before he’d ever heard of graffiti, RISK was unconsciously writing it. As a child, he filled sketchbook after sketchbook with images, not just of people and things but also letters. He even had spray paint in his hand before ever applying it to a wall, using it to paint BMX bikes. “Even back then I think I was addicted to spray paint,” he recalls. “I just loved painting with it.”

In describing this exhibition, he states:

"Twenty-Six is a collection letters that I painted as if I were painting on the streets, using what paint and materials I had in my studio. I sat and pumped them out, making sure they all had movement and the energy of good old school graffiti. It is a celebration of where I'm at today and where I have come from. Twenty-six letters of the alphabet, twenty-six years; I can’t think of a better way to define myself and my view of graffiti art."

Contemplating the arc of his career, RISK attributes his success to something deep inside him. “I think I was the first to do a lot of stuff because I was competitive. I always wanted to take things one step further.”

At an early age it was apparent King didn't fit in societies design. School was always an up hill battle, but was tolerated for the chance to participate in art classes or any other creative outlet they would provide. Native to southern California he grew up skating the streets of Long beach and it's surrounding cities.

After high school he was forced to join the working class, doing odd jobs at skate shops and anything that required manual labor. Bored, tired and broke the seedy underbelly of life's desires reared it's ugly head and anything but the right decision was made.

Sometimes hitting rock bottom is what it takes to discover what you live for, art and skateboarding became salvation. After only a few semesters at his local junior collage it became apparent that  illustration and design was going to become his career.

Joe wishes he would have found the answer sooner but like in creating art, or what ever the media, it's the process which should be the most enjoyable. Since 2005 joe has been taking his work more serious, and working with iconic brands such as Crooks N Castles and OBEY. Outside his intricate illustration world he still finds time to hit the stunt wood.

I was born in 1979 in Palmerston North, New Zealand, but from 1984 have been based in the inner city suburbs of Auckland. The move from small town to big city was key in shaping the course of my life and mode of expression. Growing up amidst the initial explosion of Hip Hop in New Zealand, I experienced a childhood set against a backdrop of graffiti and the vibrancy of Polynesian culture. With no formal training to speak of, I have always strived to be one of the driving forces within the New Zealand writing scene. At a face value level my progression in Style-Painting and ability to work within the parameters of New York graffiti foundations - adding and evolving with time - has had a visible impact on the general aesthetic of the local scene. I have always considered myself a 'Bigger-Picture' person and have constantly engaged myself in projects that have brought significant attention to the graffiti artists of New Zealand. Writing has allowed me to travel and paint in many exciting places including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Basel, Copenhagen, London, Dublin, New York, and Los Angeles, not to mention throughout my own country.

My name is Mike Shinoda. I play in a band called Linkin Park. I try to split my time between my band and my art...this is a page about my art.

I have aBFA in Illustration from Art Center College ofDesign, and spend a lot of time painting and working in the computer to create pieces that I feel capture something about the strange experiences I've have wile working and traveling. In the past few years, I've been able to show my stuff at a number of great galleries, andhad the pleasure ofcollaborating on pieces withSEEN,Gary Baseman,DALEK, Greg CRAOLA Simkins, Mr. Hahn, and JeffMcMillan.

My most recent show, entitled "GLORIOUS EXCESS BORN," was a sold-outevent at JANM in Los Angeles. I think my favorite piece from the show was called "ICON"--an eight foot tall paint and digital print piece made entirely of thousands of tiny dollar signs. Fans lined up around the block to see the art, and the venue saw its highest one-day store sales in history. Upcomingshows include "GLORIOUS EXCESS DIES" at JANM later in 2009, and a TBAshow in New York in early 2010.

I try to make every effort to donate the sales of his art to charity.Proceeds from my art shows benefit Music For Relief (www.musicforrelief.org

KC Ortiz is a freelance photojournalist based in his hometown of Chicago.  His first experiences in photography grew out of documenting the gang and graffiti lifestyle that he grew up in on the streets of Chicago. The focus of his work is on the world's forgotten and over looked people.  The aim of his photography is to bring awareness to the masses of those that are suffering most, often times completely unseen by the majority.  His photography has taken him to all corners of the world to document causes close to him.  Since his early days of photographing his friends and their mischief he has moved on to documenting everything from the modern art movement to the TB epidemic in India.  He has worked with major publications and corporations as well as NGO’s in his career.  Additionally, he is a partner in the artist collective We Are Supervision.

The Witnes is a California based artist born in Saigon, Vietnam during the peak of the War. After being raised in Toronto, Canada for 8 years, he was re-rooted once again to be planted in Southern California.  As a product of the environment, The Witnes became familiar with subcultures such as skateboarding, graffiti and cryptozoology. During the mid to late 80s, The Witnes took notes on the art of graffiti written on the streets, freeways and various walls of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles. His older brother tagged Sumet and introduced him to key elements needed for a growing vandal. These ingredients were the book Subway Art, other local graffiti writers (Krush KSN, Eklips AWR and TCF members) and graffiti yards. Twenty years later, The Witnes is still absorbing these same elements. The Witnes is a member of the Los Angeles's infamous AWR crew, as well as the NASA crew of Cerritos. He currently resides in Orange County, and works as a freelance artist and also works on his own company/project called "EyeWitness". The EyeWitness Brand produces collectibles and apparel. As a hobby, The Witnes partakes in sasquatch searching expeditions and other paranormal activity investigations.

The last couple of days I have been surfing a ton. So much that I woke up this morning slightly unmotivated to get out there, despite it being sick. So seeing I have been surfing more than shooting photos, I figure it would be a good excuse to get out in the water with the camera to share what the waves look like out front.

All the photos were shot with my Canon 5D mkii, inside of an SPL Waterhousing with a Canon 17-40 f4 shot at 18mm.
